Dr. Ventura's research fields include organic geochemistry, isotope geochemistry, and petroleum geochemistry. His research areas have included Guaymas Basin in the Gulf of California; sedimentary basins of Nova Scotia, including the Scotian Margin and marine source rock prospectivity of New Zealand.
